A digital print of Krishanu’s painting, Four Poster Bed. Each print is numbered and signed by the artist.
"Four Poster Bed crosses both my Interiors and my Another Country series. It depicts a woman asleep or cocooned in a four poster bed, in India. It is day, so there is light shining through the window."
-MK, May 2023
The painting, Four Poster Bed, was shown at LGDR, New York in 2022 and will be featured in The Whitechapel Gallery’s upcoming group exhibition, Life is More Important than Art, from June 14 until 17 September 2023.
Matthew Krishanu (b.1980) was born in Bradford and based in London. He completed an MA in Fine Art at Central Saint Martins in 2009. Krishanu’s paintings explore topics including childhood, race, religion, art history, family, grief and love. His subjects – frequently Brown people – are realised with a shallow pictorial depth, delicate washes of colour, and with a sense of interior life. Through this, Krishanu questions the positions of his painterly subjects and depictions of landscapes in relation to the legacy of European colonialism and the art historical canon. Krishanu’s practice is heavily informed by his early childhood spent in Dhaka where his parents moved in order to work for the Church of Bangladesh.
Recent solo exhibitions include: ‘Playground', Niru Ratnam, London (2022); ‘Undercurrents', LGDR, New York (2022); ‘Arrow and Pulpit', Tanya Leighton, Berlin (2021), ‘The Sun Never Sets', Midlands Arts Centre, Birmingham, (2019).
Krishanu had a solo exhibition at Matt's Gallery in 2019 entitled, House of Crows. He is a trustee of Matt's Gallery and longstanding friend of Founder and Director, Robin Klassnik.
The print was originally conceived as part of a selection of works curated by Klassnik for the Barts Health arts organization, Vital Arts, to be hung in the staff on-call rooms at Whipps Cross Hospital, who have edition #1 in the series. It is dedicated to the memory of Uschi Gatward.
The artist has donated this edition to the gallery and all proceeds will go towards supporting the gallery programme.
Krishanu is resprented by Niru Ratnam Gallery, London, Jhaveri Contemporary, Mumbai and Tanya Leighton, Berlin and Los Angeles.
