MattFlix presents Smashing, a selection of video works by Jimmie Durham made between 1994-2004. The works range from 50 seconds to 92 minutes in length, and centre around the video-performance Smashing (2004), made as part of Durham’s teaching residency at Fondazione Antonio Ratti in Como, Italy in 2004.

Born in Arkansas in 1940, Jimmie Durham is a sculptor, essayist and poet. Recent solo exhibitions include venues such as the Smithsonian’s Hirschhorn Museum, Washington (2016); MAXXI, Rome (2016); Serpentine Gallery, London (2015); and Neuer Berliner Kunstverein, Berlin (2015), among many others.

Durham’s long relationship with Matt’s Gallery began in 1988 with his first solo exhibition at the gallery, Pocahontas and the Little Carpenter in London, followed by Building a Nationin 2006. Durham also contributed the drypoint etching Our House (2007) to the Matt’s Gallery E3 4RR print portfolio. Our House can be viewed by appointment at the Prints and Drawings Room at Tate Britain, London, and will also be on view at Firstsite, Colchester as part of their exhibition My Name Is Not Refugee until Sunday 6 June 2021.
